It is appropriate to deliver an apology (對唔住 in Cantonese) when something wrong has been done and the expression is called for.

It is natural to describe feelings of the doctor in his own words, and the recipient will understand.  It is also appropriate to feel and express sorry about physical happenings with another person and/or  the feeling so related.  Mutual understanding improves when the doctor appreciates and confirms feelings of the patient.

A good apology starts verbal, with accompanying appropriate body language and use of words.  The problem is acknowledged, the root cause(s) is identified, and corrective measures are proposed.  Sincerity is appreciated and respected is earned when plans are implemented.

Before making an apology or decision not to do so, discussion with colleagues especially experienced ones is important.  The discussion often clarifies matters to the doctor himself.  Company by a senior doctor is often useful.  It may be necessary to engage the clinical department or hospital, and on occasions, the Medical Protection Society.  The Medical Protection Society may be contacted in HK via the HK Medical Association or a medico-legal lawyer. 

Careful and detailed note keeping is vital.  It is preferable to be witnessed.  It is also necessary to construct a good care-plan ahead, before engaging the patient for discussion.
